I am an atheist living in the USA. I am surrounded by dangerous people who believe that they do the will of invisible, mysterious, all powerful beings. They believe in devils, angels, hell, heaven, and gods. They thank god for good things that happen and take the blame for all bad things that happen. They think that I am the crazy one. Please count me as an atheist! There are far too few of us in the U.S. as it is, so I'm happy to be counted on your blogroll. I figure that after we come to terms with the myth of America, we might be ready to tackle the absurdity of believing in a God. Time will tell.

I'm an atheist and I'd love to be included on your list. I am certainly open to proof and am willing to change my mind, but the way things stand at the moment, I don't see me becoming one with Christ, Allah, Krishna or anyone else anytime soon.

I too live in the USA and, as Paul Maybury, Jr., said of himself above, I am surrounded by potentially dangerous people who believe they are in contact with invisible magic beings who "see" and "know" more than they do. Christians think of themselves as fishers of men's souls. Think of me as one fish that got away.

Sure, why not? I'm somewhere between an atheist and an agnostic. But I don't care much for either title. Both words assume some abnormality in what would be default position in any other field of thought. I am not an amermaidist just because there is no evidence for mermaids.

Semantically, there is no content difference between “In the beginning, God said “let there be light” and “from the singularity (the Big Bang) the universe exploded in a burst of energy”.
There is a diametrically opposite world view between the two statements.
For my simple mind the major difference can be stated thusly; The first statement implies explicit knowledge that is handed down from on high, unalterable, unquestionable and non falsifiable. The second implies questioning, wondering and experimentation – and the ability to discard theories that do not adhere to observation and measurement.
As an engineer, I can not look at what little of the universe I’m able to perceive without awe and wonder at how well it all works – however, as a curiosity driven homo sap I also can’t resist poking and teasing with the miniscule tools at my disposal at some the more accessible bits, in my case the electromagnetic spectrum, - I’m still playing with the two slit problem with Schrödinger's cat.

I really dislike labels. Mainly because I have spent way too much time trying to find any suitable ones to fit me. I don't think I am an atheist, but I wouldn't really fall into the agnostic category unless your definitely is that no matter what happens life, I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe there is a "Heaven", maybe there is darkness and dirt, maybe you come back as an "eyeball" or maybe it's the aliens. So, if that qualifies me, I would be honored to be added to your blog roll. How's that for an excruciatingly long answer to a simple question?

ReplyDeleteI don't "believe in" the gods and goddesses -- I am the gods and goddesses.
And unlike most folks with religious leanings, I'm fully aware that my mythologies are just that -- myths made up over the course of time (probably in the long cold winters when there wasn't much else to do) to keep mankind from freaking out over the self-aware fact that he is mortal and will someday die.
I'm not quite sure how you're gonna categorize me on this, but I'm looking forward to exploring the blogroll!

Became an atheist 35 years ago at the age of 18. I was told, over and over, that the day would come when I "return to Christ". I have had numerous trials in my 53 years that could have led me fall on my knees and pray - if there were even the tiniest thought in the back of my brain that there were some higher power out there capable of delivering me from my anguish. But I am so thoroughly convinced that no such thing exists, that regardless of my pain there was absolutely no reason to waste a moment of my time with it. For better or worse, this is all I have. I'm not going to make up a "happy ending" to comfort me in my rapidly passing years. I'll die rational, if nothing else.

I am not prepared to give up a "secular world view". I have quite a few reasons for this, but I am not sure I will go into them at this stage.

ReplyDeleteSome atheists claim I'm not an atheist or that I should call myself an agnostic because I do believe that there are NATURAL forces at work that we may not be able to measure with current technology; just think back to before we knew anything about quantum physics if you don't get how I can think that.
However, I don't believe in any sort of deity putting these forces in order...call me what you will, but I guess I'd consider myself an open-minded, non-theistic skeptic! :)
You are making the common mistake of assuming that one cannot be both. Atheism is a position of belief while agnosicism refers to knowledge. As an atheist, I do not believe in the existence of gods. As an agnostic, I hold the view that it is impossible to prove or disprove the existence of gods. In other words, even if gods did exist, it would be impossible to prove it. Therefore, I am an agnostic atheist...I do not believe in the existence of any gods but I don't believe it is possible to prove (or to know) that gods do not exist.
